Paul is a U.S. truck driver working in Iraq. After an attack by a group of Iraqis he wakes to find he is buried alive inside a coffin. With only a lighter and a cell phone it's a race against time to escape this claustrophobic death trap.

Throughout the film, we observe a series of call made by Paul in an effort to protect his release from the coffin. He first contacts his employer, the CRT corporation, where he learns his circumstance is not distinct and the company isn't happy to pay any ransom.

Next, he gets through to the State Department's hostage professional Dan Brenner, who ensures Paul that he'll do his best to find and save him. He also calls his family in between the calls, simply to get his voice cut off by responding to makers. Concurrently, he gets threatening calls from his captor who requires a ransom for his release.

The Unraveling
Paul records a video with the phone to send his last message to his family, admitting his adultery and wishing them a good life. He also witnesses on the phone a fellow captor's execution, increasing his fear. He begins receiving messages of being located and eventually rescued. His hope resurfaces with the noises of a close-by drill. However in a dreadful turn of occasions, while another coffin is successfully excavated, he's not in it.

Conclusion
The conclusion of "Buried" is a poignant reflection of the hidden horrors of war and the mental toll it takes on innocent victims. As the last little life is drawn out of Paul, he recognizes that it's not him, but Mark White, another hostage, who was rescued. In an agony-filled ending, the movie leaves the audience with Paul's dying breath, defenseless in the darkness of his premature tomb.
