In the future, America is a dystopian wasteland. The latest scourge is Ma-Ma, a prostitute-turned-drug pusher with a dangerous new drug and aims to take over the city. The only possibility of stopping her is an elite group of urban police called Judges, who combine the duties of judge, jury and executioner to deliver a brutal brand of swift justice. But even the top-ranking Judge, Dredd, discovers that taking down Ma-Ma isn’t as easy as it seems in this explosive adaptation of the hugely popular comic series.

Introduction
"Dredd" is a 2012 sci-fi action movie directed by Pete Travis and written by Alex Garland. It is based on the 2000 AD comic strip Judge Dredd and its eponymous character, developed by John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra. The movie stars Karl Urban as Judge Dredd, a police in the dystopian future where crime is rampant, and judges are offered the power to serve as judge, jury, and executioner. Dredd is joined by novice Judge Cassandra Anderson (played by Olivia Thirlby), who possesses psychic capabilities, as they take on a ruthless drug lord, Ma-Ma (played by Lena Headey).

Setting
"Dredd" takes place in a dystopian future in the sprawling metropolitan area of Mega-City One, an enormous metropolitan location covering most of the eastern United States. The city is plagued by crime and poverty, with residents living in fear of wrongdoers and gangs who manage vast territories. To keep order, the Hall of Justice uses the Judges, police officers who have the authority to give justice, including executions, on the area.

Plot
As the movie opens, Judge Dredd is assessing novice Judge Cassandra Anderson, who has failed her final examination at the academy but is being provided an opportunity to prove herself due to her psychic capabilities. Dredd and Anderson are dispatched to investigate a gruesome triple murder in Peach Trees, a 200-story shanty town tower block, which is managed by the ruthless drug lord Ma-Ma.

Ma-Ma has acquired power by distributing a new drug called Slo-Mo, which triggers users to experience time at a portion of its normal rate. Upon coming to the criminal offense scene, Dredd and Anderson apprehend a drug dealership named Kay, one of Ma-Ma's enforcers, responsible for the murders. Anderson uses her psychic capabilities to interrogate Kay, finding that the victims were one-time members of Ma-Ma's gang who had tried to set up a competing drug operation.

In order to avoid Kay from being apprehended and revealing her secrets, Ma-Ma orders her security forces to lock down the structure, trapping the Judges inside. They need to battle their way through waves of wrongdoers and corrupt Judges working for Ma-Ma, while struggling to survive and protect the innocent residents caught in the crossfire.

Action Sequences
"Dredd" is filled with extreme, visceral, and typically ruthless action series that show the Judges' arsenal of modern weapons and combat skills. The film's usage of Slo-Mo as a plot gadget allows for aesthetically remarkable slow-motion scenes of violence that contrast the gritty environment of Mega-City One. Dredd and Anderson's partnership produces a dynamic that includes emotional depth to the action, as the concern of carrying out criminals weighs heavily on Anderson, forcing her to review her commitment to becoming a Judge.

Reception

In spite of its cult following and crucial acclaim in some quarters, the film underperformed at package workplace and has yet to spawn any follows up, though fans continue to campaign for a follow-up movie or tv series.
