Ella lives in a magical world in which each child, at the moment of their birth, is given a virtuous "gift" from a fairy godmother. Ella's so-called gift, however, is obedience. This birthright proves itself to be quite the curse once Ella finds herself in the hands of several unscrupulous characters whom she quite literally cannot disobey. Determined to gain control of her life and decisions, Ella sets off on a journey to find her fairy godmother who she hopes will lift the curse. The path, however, isn't easy -- Ella must outwit a slew of unpleasant obstacles including ogres, giants, wicked stepsisters, elves and Prince Charmont's evil uncle, who wants to take over the crown and rule the kingdom.

Plot Summary
"Ella Enchanted" is a modern-day Cinderella story set in a fantastical kingdom that combines elements of fairy tales with modern perceptiveness. When Ella of Frell (Anne Hathaway) was born, her fairy godmother, Lucinda (Vivica A. Fox), bestows on her a suspicious "present" of obedience. Ella needs to follow any direct command, no matter what it is. This shows to be more of a curse than a blessing, permitting others to make the most of her.

Welcoming the Quest
After her mother's death, Ella's daddy remarries a harsh lady, Dame Olga (Joanna Lumley), with 2 wicked children, Hattie (Lucy Punch) and Olive (Jenniffer Higham), who delight in exploiting Ella's "gift". When Hattie discovers her secret, she uses it to torture Ella much more. Driven by the need for flexibility, Ella embarks on a quest to discover Lucinda and reverse the spell.

Relationship, Challenges, and Prince Char
On her journey, Ella is joined by a smart and fast-talking bookworm, Benny (Jimi Mistry), who has himself been cursed by Lucinda and developed into a book. They also experience a fairy named Slannen (Aidan McArdle) who dreams of being a lawyer rather than a performer as his kind are compelled to be. Ella's experiences present her to Prince Charmont (Hugh Dancy), who she initially dislikes. However, they quickly form a bond, and Char becomes taken with Ella, uninformed of her "gift".

Struggles Against Evil
Prince Char's computing uncle, Sir Edgar (Cary Elwes), and his ominous accomplice, a giant snake named Heston, strategy to take the throne. When Edgar learns about Ella's obedience, he sees it as a chance to control the prince. Meanwhile, Ella, with figured out vitality, continues her journey in search of her flexibility.

Conclusion and Liberation
In the climax of the film, Sir Edgar orders Ella to eliminate Prince Char at midnight throughout the coronation ball. A desperate Ella attempts to resist the command and struggles to overcome the spell. Lastly, Ella confesses her love for Prince Char at the ball, which provides her the strength to break her obedience curse. Ella defends Char from Edgar's treacherous plot and exposes his wicked intentions.

Retributive Justice and Happy Ending
Lucinda appears again to repair all the wrongs she triggered with her misguided presents. Edgar, after being turned into a frog as punishment, is squashed flat by a flying spellbook. Ella's stepfamily is penalized by Lucinda with ironic gifts just like she gave to Ella and Benny. Prince Char weds Ella, releasing Slannen and the other oppressed animals, and they live gladly ever after.

"Ella Enchanted" is a delightful film, combining enchanting aspects of fairy tales with an empowering twist where the lead character conserves not just herself, but her prince and her kingdom too. Through a roller-coaster journey of magic, love, guts, and adventure, Ella teaches us the power of self-determination and the strength of heart it requires to get rid of problems.
