Foreign Correspondent (1940)

Foreign Correspondent Poster

The European war was only beginning to erupt across national borders. Johnny Jones, an American crime reporter dispatched by his New York publisher to put a fresh spin on the drowsy dispatches emanating from overseas, has a nose for a good story—which promptly leads him to the crime of fascism and Nazi Germany's designs on European conquest. In attempting to learn more about a seemingly noble peace effort, Jones walks into the middle of an assassination, uncovers a spy ring and—not entirely coincidentally—falls in love.

Film Overview
"Foreign Correspondent" is a thrilling 1940 spy film directed by Alfred Hitchcock, which is based on the unique "Personal History" by Vincent Sheean. Embed in the pre-World War II duration, the movie follows an American reporter attempting to expose enemy spies in Britain. Its significant casts consist of Joel McCrea as Johnny Jones, Laraine Day as Carol Fisher, Herbert Marshall as Stephen Fisher, and George Sanders as ffolliott.

Plot Summary
The story begins with Johnny Jones, a crime press reporter for the New York Globe, who is selected as a foreign correspondent to cover the escalating situation in Europe. Under the pseudonym Huntley Haverstock, Jones is assigned to interview a Dutch diplomat named Van Meer, who is understood for his advocacy for peace. Upon reaching London, he satisfies a worldwide peace organization leader, Stephen Fisher, and his beautiful child Carol whom Jones develops a tourist attraction to.

All Of A Sudden, Van Meer is seemingly assassinated in Johnny's existence in the Netherlands. Johnny and Carol pursue the assassin, leading them to a windmill where they find Van Meer alive and being held detainee. It unfolds that the assassination was staged, as part of a conspiracy including the peace party that Fisher belongs of.

Conspiracy and Espionage
Johnny teams up with ffolliott (his last name spelled with a small 'f'), a fellow press reporter to rescue Van Meer. Their attempt is not successful but in the middle of the confusion, Johnny manages to reveal the conspiracy on a radio broadcast. On finding Fisher's involvement, he feels personally betrayed as he has actually fallen for Carol despite her dad's villainy.

Thrilling Climax
In the exciting final part of the film, Johnny, Carol, ffolliott and other guests are on an aircraft heading to America to expose the spy ring. However, Fisher, aboard the exact same aircraft, exposes they are about to be shot down by a German destroyer. In a desperate attempt to conserve them, Fisher leaps to his death while Johnny manages to send one last transmission revealing their area.

The plane crashes into the ocean, leaving the travelers to fight for survival. After a dramatic series of events, they are ultimately saved. In the concluding scene, Johnny is seen relaying a message of defiance and resilience as London is bombarded, embodying the willpower of the free world on the verge of war.

Important Acclaim
"Foreign Correspondent" gathered extensive recognition for its tight storytelling, thrilling series and complicated characterization. Hitchcock masterfully mixed aspects of thriller, humor, romance, and drama to craft an appealing espionage narrative. Regardless of the plain background of approaching war, the movie's overall tone is remarkably light due to Hitchcock's deft handling of the subject matter.
