Ghost Stories (2018)

Ghost Stories Poster

Professor Phillip Goodman devotes his life to exposing phony psychics and fraudulent supernatural shenanigans. His skepticism soon gets put to the test when he receives news of three chilling and inexplicable cases -- disturbing visions in an abandoned asylum, a car accident deep in the woods and the spirit of an unborn child. Even scarier -- each of the macabre stories seems to have a sinister connection to the professor's own life.

Film Overview
"Ghost Stories" is a British scary movie directed and written by Jeremy Dyson and Andy Nyman, released in 2018. The movie was adjusted from the 2010 play of the exact same name. Nyman stars as a tv teacher, Philip Goodman, who stumbles upon 3 ghost stories that challenge his uncertainty towards the supernatural.

Plot Summary
The film opens with Professor Philip Goodman, whose profession is committed to exposing supernatural phenomena. His idol, Charles Cameron, inexplicably invites him to examine 3 unsolved cases which, according to Cameron, are "unsolvable".

In the first case, Tony Matthews, a night watchman at an abandoned asylum, experiences a frightening encounter with a cruel spirit. Despite Goodman's efforts to offer a mental explanation, the occurrence haunts Tony, causing significant psychological trauma.

The second case includes a young man, Simon Rifkind, who claims to have actually hit a demonic figure with his automobile. Paranoid and horrified, Simon insists his life is in risk from the entity. Goodman, although not encouraged, discovers Simon's worry upsetting.

The third case introduces Mike Priddle, a wealthy and successful entrepreneur. Mike tells his experience with a poltergeist which he thinks to be his unborn kid's spirit. As soon as again, Goodman tries to expose the claim in spite of Mike's deadly outcome following the haunting.

Discovery and Conclusion
Throughout his examinations, Goodman experiences weird, inexplicable happenings and starts to question his staunch shock in the supernatural. In a critical plot twist, it is revealed that Goodman himself is the subject of the 3 ghost stories, not an outdoors observer.

The stories symbolize Goodman's existential crisis and are somehow linked to his life. The night watchman shows Goodman's school life when he failed to step in throughout a mentally disabled boy's bullying. The hit-and-run event associates with a mishap Goodman was involved in while getting away the troubling scene. The 3rd case represents Goodman's regret over his father's death and how he didn't display grief then.

In the climax, Charles Cameron turns out to be a fabrication of Goodman's subconscious where he sees himself in the future, remorseful for not believing in the paranormal. Goodman understands that his denial, regret, and suspicion suppressed the truths about his past.

Ending Scene
The film concludes with a hospitalized Goodman, who is left questioning his life. Recognizing that the ghost stories were mental representations of reduced guilt and trauma, he discharges himself from the health center, to challenge his past mistakes. The film purposefully leaves open-ended, enabling audiences to form their conclusions about Goodman's fate.

Vital Reception
"Ghost Stories" received normally positive evaluations for its thoughtful narrative, chilling atmosphere, and interesting efficiencies, particularly Nyman's. The film's expedition of guilt, regret, and self-delusion, together with its spooky expositions, were commemorated for using a fresh take on the horror genre.
