As the son of a Viking leader on the cusp of manhood, shy Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III faces a rite of passage: he must kill a dragon to prove his warrior mettle. But after downing a feared dragon, he realizes that he no longer wants to destroy it, and instead befriends the beast – which he names Toothless – much to the chagrin of his warrior father.

Film Overview
"How to Train Your Dragon" is a 2010 animated adventure movie directed by Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois. Produced by Dreamworks Animation, the movie is loosely based upon the 2003 book series of the same name by Cressida Cowell. The story explores an unusual relationship between a young Viking named Hiccup and a dragon called Toothless.

Plot Outline
In the movie, the separated village of Berk is constantly under attack from dragons, which incites the villagers, especially the Vikings, to fight versus these animals. Hiccup, the underweight child of the burly Viking chief Stoick, ardently tries to win his daddy's respect by killing a dragon.

Nevertheless, when Hiccup hurts a Night Fury dragon called Toothless throughout one of the village's dragon fights, he can not bring himself to kill it. Rather, he befriends Toothless and discovers that dragons aren't savage monsters as the Vikings believed. He finds out that dragons pillage animals since they are enslaved by a giant dragon who requires them to plunder so it can consume.

Hiccup's Relationship with Toothless
Misstep's relationship with Toothless evolves as he covertly feeds and trains the dragon, and in return, Toothless allows Hiccup to make a prosthetic device to change his lost tail wing, allowing him to fly once again. Misstep uses his newfound understanding about dragons to divert other dragons throughout battles with his fellow Vikings, making him a more effective warrior than previously.

Exposing the Truth
When Hiccup's private activities are discovered, his dad Stoick disowns him. Later, the Vikings depart to combat the dragons in their nest, leaving Hiccup and a few of his pals behind. Using devices designed by Hiccup to control, not eliminate, dragons, Hiccup, and his buddies ride their qualified dragons in pursuit of the Viking warriors.

The Climax
In the end, Hiccup and Toothless rescue the village by defeating the giant dragon shackling the others. While doing so, Hiccup loses his leg however acquires the regard and admiration of his father and the entire town. As the film concludes, Berk villagers and dragons are seen living side by-side harmoniously, acknowledging the bond in between Hiccup and Toothless.

Movie Reception
"How to Train Your Dragon" was an important and commercial success, with appreciation directed at its animation, voice acting, character development, and emotional depth.
