They are on the run from Jeanine Matthews (Kate Winslet), the power-hungry leader of the Erudite faction who aims to annihilate all Divergents and seize control over the whole society.

Development of Plot
Jeanine finds a mystical box that she thinks consists of a message from the city's founders, presumed to be the key to managing Divergents. Nevertheless, the box can only be opened by a Divergent who can sustain 'simulations' of all 5 factions, which she assumes to be Tris.

In spite of several efforts to stay safe and concealed, Tris is recorded by Jeanine's forces. She undergoes these simulations but manages to survive due to her diverse virtues. Through the simulations, she conquers her guilt over the deaths she's been a part of and discovers to forgive herself.

Resolution
In a climactic conflict, Tris, Four, and their allies manage to defeat Jeanine and her forces. They open the box, revealing a message from a woman declaring to be among the city's founders. In the message, it's found that the city is an experiment which the Divergents are the success of that trial. They are encouraged to send out the Divergents out into the world beyond the city walls. Although Jeanine tries to avoid this info from being disclosed, she is eventually killed, and the revelation sends out shockwaves through the population.
