In 1931, the Bondurant brothers of Franklin County, Virginia, run a multipurpose backwoods establishment that hides their true business — bootlegging. Middle brother Forrest is the brain of the operation; older Howard is the brawn, and younger Jack, the lookout. Though the local police have taken bribes and left the brothers alone, a violent war erupts when a sadistic lawman from Chicago arrives and tries to shut down the Bondurants operation.

"Lawless" is a 2012 American crime drama film directed by John Hillcoat. The movie script by Nick Cave is based upon the novel "The Wettest County worldwide" by Matt Bondurant. The movie stars an ensemble cast consisting of Shia LaBeouf, Tom Hardy, Gary Oldman, Mia Wasikowska, Jessica Chastain, Jason Clarke, and Guy Pearce. It is set during the Prohibition age, providing a semi-fictionalized account of the Bondurant Brothers-- Forrest, Howard, and Jack-- who were bootlegging in rural Virginia.

Plot Summary
"Lawless" analyzes the everyday lives of the Bondurant Brothers, bootleggers known for their invincibility. The youngest brother, Jack, is portrayed as enthusiastic but ignorant, looking up to gangster Floyd Banner (Gary Oldman). The oldest brother, Howard, has basic perfects and is the brute force of the group. Conflict
The narrative centers around the siblings' struggle against corrupt Special Deputy Charlie Rakes (Guy Pearce) dispatched from Chicago. The Bondurant brothers refuse to bend to Rakes' authority, which leads to an escalating war between them. Jack gets ambitious and begins distilling and dispersing a much higher grade of alcohol, further complicating their relationship with Rakes.

Romantic Subplots
In the midst of strife, each sibling discovers a love interest. Forrest, a man of few words, finds an unspoken connection with Maggie (Jessica Chastain), a city female getting away from her past. The ignorant yet enthusiastic Jack experiences young love with Bertha, a preacher's daughter, played by Mia Wasikowska.

Climax
As the bros decline to send to Rakes' pressure, violence intensifies. Jack's monopoly outrages other bootleggers, and Forrest gets assaulted completely, amazingly making it through. Rakes' cruelty is the last straw, and the local bootleggers join. Rakes passes away in a shootout, Jack is injured however makes it through, and their moonshine company ends with the arrival of the law.

Conclusion
The movie concludes by showing Jack and Bertha driving in a car manufactured lawfully by Jack. Forrest and Maggie also endure, and it is shared through Jack's narration that Forrest died years later of pneumonia. Howard transferred to Brooklyn and vanished from history while Jack blogged about the family's legend after giving up moonshining.

Overall Themes and Reception
"Lawless" looks into styles of household, loyalty, greed, and the corruption of power. Regardless of the Bondurant siblings' bootlegging activities, they are represented as honourable characters set versus the abject authority figure of Rakes.
