Plot
The main lead character in the "Little Black Book" is Stacy Holt (played by Brittany Murphy), an associate producer for a talk television show. Feeling unfulfilled at her job, she is motivated to interrogate her partner Derek's (played by Ron Livingston) previous relationships to understand him better and safeguard herself from possible distress. This quest is spurred by her curiosity and her boss Barb's unconventional suggestions. Barb (played by Holly Hunter) motivates Stacy to utilize the program's resources to look into Derek's past.

Stacy privately explores Derek's PDA (personal digital assistant) she discovers while he is on a business journey. It included details about his ex-girlfriends, leading her to initiate contact with three of them: an obsessive former sweetheart, Lulu Fritz (played by Josie Maran); a woman who dreamed of becoming a supermodel, Joyce (played by Julianne Nicholson); and a gynecologist, Dr. Rachel Keyes (played by Rashida Jones). Stacy befriends these women under incorrect pretenses, only attempting to understand their relationships with Derek much better.

Discoveries
Stacy eventually reveals her real identity to Joyce. Joyce faces Derek about Stacy's investigations, leading to a dispute among the 3. Intriguingly, the drama unfolds on Stacy's tv show, culminating in a live broadcast where Derek's previous relationships are exposed, much to his surprise. The resulting revelations and fights result in Derek leaving both Stacy and Joyce.
