Long Weekend (2009)

Long Weekend Poster

Peter and Carla, a couple whose marriage is faltering, decide to go on a camping weekend. When they become lost, the pair sets up camp on a remote beach that doesn't seem to be on any map. At first the trip is the romantic getaway they imagined – then slowly things begin to go wrong. After Peter disrespects the unspoiled habitat, it seems as if the surroundings are exacting revenge on the couple, as insects, animals, and then nature itself become the enemy.

Film Overview
"Long Weekend" is a mental thriller produced in 2009 by Australian director Jamie Blanks. The movie is a remake of the 1978 movie bearing the exact same name, composed by Everett De Roche. This gripping movie features the story of a couple with a stretched relationship who suddenly discover themselves in the middle of unconventional chaos where nature appears to be against them. The film stars Jim Caviezel as Peter and Claudia Karvan as Carla.

Plot Summary
The story starts with Peter and Carla, a separated couple, who start a camping journey over a long weekend in an attempt to fix their relationship. They argue throughout their journey into the remote beach, as their relationship shows various concerns from past grievances and infidelities. Despite numerous warnings about the sacredness of the website they are about to breach, the couple shows blatant disregard for nature by littering, shooting gunshots randomly, eliminating a dugong and slicing down a tree.

Ominous Turn of Events
The couple's lack of consideration for their environment soon becomes their failure as nature starts to revolt versus them. They begin noticing odd occurrences, as animals seem to attack them inexplicably. Peter's pet, Cricket, is inexplicably eliminated, and they find a seal that Peter shot earlier, still alive. Picking up danger, the couple tries to leave the website, but their automobile fails to start, leaving them stranded.

Escalation and Climax
As the motion picture progresses, the scenarios substantially intensify, and the mystical existence of nature magnifies. This is evident when swarms of birds start assaulting their cars and truck, and Peter experiences a series of nature-related freak accidents. The suspense levels peak when Carla experiences a phantom pregnancy and enters into labor.

The climax intensifies when Carla, who chose to leave Peter and return back to civilization, unwittingly circles back to the campsite, suggesting the unavoidable wrath of nature. Throughout their final night, they are assaulted by the possum they unthinkingly injured, causing Peter accidentally shooting Carla.

Conclusion
In the final scene, it is exposed that Peter was alone throughout the weekend, hinting that all incidents may have been fantasies of his imagination perhaps set off by his regret concerning their weakening relationship and Carla's miscarriage.

Styles and Interpretation
"Long Weekend" explores styles such as guilt, retribution, the supernatural, and the force of Mother Nature. It plays out the idea of 'Karma' where every action has a reaction, in this case, representing nature's action to the couple's disrespect. The movie stresses the significance of appreciating nature and the dire consequences of disregard. It also explores the psychological impacts of guilt, regret, and troubled relationships, manifested through Peter's hallucinations.

Conclusively, "Long Weekend" is a haunting narrative of a failing relationship intertwined with troubling supernatural components that blurs the line in between reality and illusion. It leaves the audience considering their own actions towards nature and the possible effects of their deeds.
