After learning that her child is still alive, she challenges Margaret for the custody.

Overview
"Losing Isaiah" is a heart-wrenching 1995 American drama film directed by Stephen Gyllenhaal. The movie script, composed by Naomi Foner, is based upon the novel of the very same name by Seth Margolis. The story revolves around a drug-addicted African American mom who deserts her child, only to try to restore custody after the kid is adopted by a white social employee.

Plot Summary
The film starts when Khaila Richards (Halle Berry), a crack-addicted single mom, leaves her child Isaiah in a trash bin to get a fracture repair. Thinking her infant is dead, she carries on with her life. On the other hand, the baby is discovered and taken to a hospital where he recovers under the care of a committed social employee, Margaret Lewin (Jessica Lange).

Margaret, moved by Isaiah's determination to live, chooses to take him in. In time, she and her household (partner Charles and daughter Hannah) fall in love with Isaiah and ultimately decide to lawfully adopt him. Under the loving care of the Lewin household, Isaiah grows and turns into a happy and healthy toddler.

In a parallel storyline, Khaila goes to jail for drug ownership where she sobers up and finds out that Isaiah lives and has been embraced. She emerges from jail years later on having kicked her drug practice and with a job at a day care center.

The Legal Battle
Having turned over a brand-new leaf, Khaila attempts to gain back custody of Isaiah. This effort ignites an extreme legal and moral fight that questions racial biases and social constructs. A court decision at first guidelines in favor of Khaila but is later overthrew due to inadequate proof that Isaiah would be much better off with his biological mother.

Resolution
In a psychological climax, Khaila slips into the Lewin family to see Isaiah, which leads to Margaret pleading with Khaila to envision how the transition would injure Isaiah, who by now relates to the Lewins as his family. Khaila makes the challenging choice of letting Isaiah stick with the Lewins, recognizing it would be best for him not to uproot his life.

Styles and Critical Reception
"Losing Isaiah" deals with heavy styles like motherhood, dependency, racial dynamics in adoption, and the function of nature vs. nurture in kid childhood. The performances, particularly by Jessica Lange and Halle Berry, got critical acclaim for their emotional depth and intensity, bringing the film's complex problems to life. In spite of its difficult subject matter, "Losing Isaiah" manages to deliver a thought-provoking and compassionate narrative brimming with psychological resonance.
