The movie starts with a brief history of a horse-racing fraud, which is an essential event that starts the substantial series of murders and secret. The narration is done by a gunman, Mr. Goodkat (Willis), who is later on revealed to be a crucial player in the unfolding plot.

Slevin, suffering from a string of misfortune, makes a check out to New York City to see his pal, Nick Fisher. Upon arrival, he discovers Nick missing out on, and he himself is mistakenly recognized as Nick by 2 separate gangs due to a case of mistaken identity. This error lands Slevin into a world of problem as both The Rabbi and The Boss think him to be Nick, who owes them a substantial amount of money.

The Mafia Feud and Tasks
The main dispute in "Lucky Number Slevin" occurs from the feud in between The Rabbi and The Boss, who reside in opposing penthouses in New York City. Slevin, under the guise of Nick, is coerced into performing assassination jobs for both crime bosses in order to "settle" Nick's debts. Slevin is advised by The Boss to murder The Rabbi's boy, while The Rabbi requires that Slevin cough up the cash Nick owes him.

Caught in this fatal tug-of-war, Slevin is viewed and helped by his next-door neighbor and burgeoning love interest, Lindsey (Liu), and the ever-mysterious Mr. Goodkat.

Vengeance and Reveal
The plot takes a dark, twisty turn when it's revealed that the circumstance is not one of simple mistaken identity. Slevin is, in reality, managing a meticulously prepared vengeance plot against both crime managers, who had killed his parents when he was a kid. The horse-racing scam informed earlier is exposed to have actually involved Slevin's parents, causing their deaths and triggering Slevin's yearning for revenge.

Mr. Goodkat, who at first seemed to be helping the criminal activity managers, is exposed to be in cahoots with Slevin and shares a direct link to Slevin's struggling past. A young Slevin was spared by Goodkat during the hit on his parents, forming a devoted bond in between the two that leads to their revenge plot against The Rabbi and The Boss several years later.

Ending
Towards completion of the film, Slevin, with the aid of Mr. Goodkat, takes his revenge by eliminating both The Rabbi and The Boss. The plot intricately concludes with Mr. Goodkat provided an order to eliminate Lindsey who, unknowingly, has become a loose end. Rather, Goodkat spares her, matching the grace he when offered to Slevin.
