A woman tries to exonerate her brother's murder conviction by proving that the crime was committed by a supernatural phenomenon.

Intro

'Occulus' is an American supernatural scary film released in 2013. Directed by Mike Flanagan, who co-wrote the movie script with Jeff Howard, the story revolves around a potentially haunted antique mirror with a dark history.

Plot Overview
'Occulus' follows the story of sibling lead characters Kaylie and Tim Russell. As kids, they experience distressing occasions that cause their mother Marie getting possessed by a supernatural entity from an antique mirror referred to as the Lasser Glass. Their father Alan gets driven to insanity, leading to the tragic deaths of both moms and dads. Tim is institutionalized, being blamed for their father's death.

Years later on, Tim is released from the protective custody of the state after psychiatrists persuade him that the supernatural events were figments of his imagination. However, Kaylie never ever relinquished her belief in the mirror's supernatural powers. She obsessively researches the history of the Lasser Glass and the deaths associated with previous owners. She buys the mirror meaning to prove it is accountable for their parents' demise.

The Experiment
Kaylie developed an experiment to confirm the mirror's supernatural power and its misleading time perception. She established multiple electronic cameras and other preventive procedures to record the mirror's actions and secure themselves. Nevertheless, as the experiment unfolds, they start to experience hallucinations, disorientation, and relive terrible experiences under the mirror's adjustment.

The Flashbacks
The story in 'Occulus' is split between the present-day experiment and a series of flashbacks about the siblings' youth, dealing with their parents and the mirror. The stories are deeply intertwined, exposing past occasions resulting in their moms and dads' death paralleled with their experiences throughout the experiment. Their inseparable stories blur, constructing an image of the eccentricity caused by the Lasser Glass.

The Resolution
In the flashbacks, Alan, under the mirror's impact, chains Marie in their bedroom, eventually causing her death. Marie's spirit prompts young Tim to kill Alan. Tim unwillingly complies and is thus blamed for the death and institutionalised.

In the present day, the mirror develops a scary impression where Kaylie sees her reflection kill her. Back in reality, Tim sees Kaylie approaching him with an apple but hallucinates that it is the mirror. As Kaylie had actually previously established a 'eliminate switch', a weighted anchor to smash the mirror if activated, Tim triggers it, causing the anchor to swing and eliminate Kaylie while doing so.

Conclusion
After Kaylie's death, authorities arrive questioning Tim, who pleads his innocence, but the previously set-up electronic cameras only show him and Kaylie, making it look like he killed her. The film ends on a chilling note as Tim is removed, resigned to his fate, while observers notice the mirror remaining undamaged.

Theme
'Occulus' is a psychological scary masterpiece filled with suspense and extreme scenes. The movie uses the mirror as a metaphor for psychological injury that the brother or sisters were laced within from childhood to their adult years. Abundant with importance and disturbing images, the film crosses the boundaries of traditional scary, wrapping viewers into disturbing, mirrored realities.
