Film Introduction
"Poseidon" is a 2006 catastrophe film directed by Wolfgang Petersen and loosely based upon Paul Gallico's 1969 unique, "The Poseidon Adventure". The movie tells the story of a luxurious ocean liner, the S.S. Poseidon, which capsizes due to an enormous rogue wave. The plot unfolds as a group of survivors, from varied backgrounds and with varying characters, must work together to leave from the sinking ship.

Plot & Characters
On New Year's Eve, previous New York City Mayor & firemen, Robert Ramsey (Kurt Russell), his child Jennifer (Emmy Rossum), and her fiancé Christian (Mike Vogel) are amongst the revelers aboard the Poseidon. Other characters include a self-destructive guy called Richard Nelson (Richard Dreyfuss), single mother Maggie James (Jacinda Barrett) and her son Conor (Jimmy Bennett), an illegal immigrant Elena (Mía Maestro), and an aspiring vocalist and ship crew member called Valentine (Fergie) among others. The merrymaking suddenly ends when a rogue wave capsizes the ship, turning the world upside down for everybody on board.

Main Events
In the instant aftermath of the catastrophe, Ramsey, who has underwater escape experience, decides to move up to the hull. Hearing this, a group, including Nelson, Jennifer, Christian, Maggie, and Conor, choose to accompany him. The ship's captain (Andre Braugher) initially dissuades them, recommending they wait on aid. However, the group chooses to continue despite this.

They deal with a series of harmful challenges during their journey to get away. As they browse the treacherous passageways, some group members sacrifice their lives for the survival of others. Dylan Johns (Josh Lucas), an expert gambler and shifty loner, assumes an unlikely leadership function throughout these events, helping guide the group out of the wreckage while bonding with them at the same time.

Climax & Conclusion
Fighting against time and constantly flooding compartments, which are intensified by the ship slowly sinking even more, the staying survivors handle to get to the prop shaft space, where they send out an S.O.S signal. They barely handle to leave the space as it starts flooding, but Jennifer's fiancé, Christian, gets caught and drowns.

The group breaks through to the bottom of the hull, and they are saved by the coast guard simply as the ship sinks completely. The survivors view from a raft as the Poseidon sinks beneath the waves, a symbol of their traumatic ordeal and the lives lost. The film concludes, leaving the audience with a sense of relief and melancholy.

Total Themes
Throughout "Poseidon", the styles of survival versus dire chances and the resilience of the human spirit are repeatedly revealed. Petersen represents the raw human feelings throughout a crisis successfully, bringing depth to the disaster category. The Director skillfully navigates a variety of characters who rise above their viewed identities to assist others.
