The film opens with Richard II, King of England, ruling with an extravagant and flamboyant style, much to the annoyance of numerous nobles. His cousin, Henry Bolingbroke, implicates Thomas Mowbray of embezzling crown funds and complicity in the death of Richard's uncle, the Duke of Gloucester. Richard, instead of examining the claim, eliminates both from England; Bolingbroke for 10 years and Mowbray for life.

This portrayal adds depth to the character, showing a when effective King gradually lose his control and become betrayed and taken over.

Last Reflections
The film is a thorough exploration into power, betrayal, repercussions of bad management, and political intrigue. It poignantly showcases how Richard's inability to govern successfully results in his downfall. It even more shows the political maneuvering that highlights power transitions in monarchical settings-- the banishment of Bolingbroke, the seizure of Gaunt's residential or commercial property, and the ultimate coup by Bolingbroke to usurp the throne.
