Film Overview
"Sidekicks" is a 1992 martial arts movie directed by Aaron Norris. This movie combines aspects of action, funny, and dream to narrate the motivating journey of a teenage young boy called Barry, played by Jonathan Brandis. Barry is an asthmatic daydreamer who overcomes his obstacles through the medium of martial arts, assisted by his idols, Chuck Norris (playing himself) and his fitness center instructor Noreen Chan (Julia Nickson).

Main Narrative
Barry is not very athletic, is regularly bullied, and is pestered with severe asthma that hinders him from actively participating in physical activities. Despite these difficulties, he loves martial arts and, in specific, he admires the film star Chuck Norris. He invests his time daydreaming about fighting along with Norris versus his everyday bullies. To make things real, he begins training under the instructions of Miss Chan, an instructor knowledgeable in martial arts. The tandem works carefully together and eventually, Barry's health enhances as his self-confidence grows.

Barry's Masturbation
Inspired by her sibling's learning enthusiasm, Miss Chan schedules Barry's intro to her uncle, Master Stone (played by Mako). Stone consents to take Barry under his tutelage and plans for rigorous training that mainly includes meditation. On the first day of training, Barry, misunderstanding Stone's guidelines on "meditation", lands himself in an awkward circumstance. This scene is among the film's comedic highlights leaving audiences in peals of laughter.

Bullying and Overcoming
Despite his training, Barry continues to suffer bullying at school, however he preserves his faith in the martial art lessons he has actually acquired. He starts thinking and dreaming about doing extraordinary stunts and fighting the bad guys, just like his idol Chuck Norris. This self-esteem cultivated through martial arts starts to act as an effective defence mechanism for Barry versus his bullies.

The Big Karate Tournament
The climax of the story takes place through a statewide karate tournament where Barry's school gets involved. However, due to Barry's ineligibility (due to his asthma), the school team disappoints one individual. Understanding Barry's enthusiasm and training, his principal authorizes Barry's involvement in the competition. Following the custom of timeless martial arts films, the competition exists as a series of knockout rounds. The underdog team, including Barry, fights through each round, gaining much-needed confidence with every success.

The Grand Finale
In the grand finale, Barry imagine combating together with his idol, Chuck Norris; this dream comes true when Norris himself makes a surprise appearance at the competition. The duo pair up for a presentation battle, much to the awe of the crowd. Their performance showcases an exceptional display of stunts, that include Norris and Barry masterfully deactivating their opponents and landing exact blows. Winning the tournament, Barry rises from an asthmatic, bullied kid to a confident, victorious boy who has found his skill and purpose.

Conclusion
'Sidekicks' is an uplifting film that combines martial arts, teenage drama and comedy to present a heart-warming tale of a kid's journey. The movie teaches vital lessons of self-esteem, guts, perseverance, and the empowerment that comes from thinking in oneself. In spite of the movie not being a box office hit, it continues to be enjoyed for its feel-good element and inspiring theme, especially among martial arts enthusiasts.
