Film Summary
"Solaris" is a 2002 American sci-fi drama film directed by Steven Soderbergh, produced by James Cameron and Jon Landau, and starring George Clooney and Natascha McElhone. It is based on the 1961 science fiction novel of the exact same name by Polish author Stanislaw Lem.

The narrative centers around a psychologist, Chris Kelvin (George Clooney), who is sent to a spaceport station hovering over a mystical planet named Solaris to examine the unexplained behavior of the team and their subsequent death. Upon his arrival, Kelvin finds that the remaining crew members are showing signs of worry and paranoia.

Imaginary Experiences
Kelvin unexpectedly begins to experience weird visions and dreams echoing his deep-seated guilt and remorse over his deceased better half, Rheya's (Natascha McElhone) suicide. To his shock, he gets up one day to find a sensible apparition of Rheya in the space station with him.

Behind these weird phenomena is the power of Solaris, which has the mysterious ability to check out the human subconscious and bring their memories or guilt to life. These humanoid life types are referred to as 'visitors,' produced by the planet as a way of making contact with the crew members. Thus, each team member experiences 'visitors' based upon their personal life, sensations, and past experiences.

Questioning the Reality
Kelvin fights with comparing reality and dreams. He ends up being mentally tortured by the physical manifestation of Rheya, as he is confronted with his own regret, unsettled sensations, and challenges stemming from their complex relationship.

The film poses complex concerns about memory, sorrow, and individuality, with Kelvin and the recreated Rheya participating in philosophical conversations about individuality, feelings, and what it truly implies to be human. Kelvin slowly starts accepting Rheya as a physical real entity although he's mindful that she's a mere production of Solaris.

Ending Choices
In the end, there are 2 options left for Kelvin-- to return to Earth or remain with Solaris. In a final twist, the motion picture leaves viewers contemplating which choice Kelvin makes. The uncertain finale shows Kelvin living quietly with Rheya on an ethereal variation of Earth, suggesting he might have chosen to stick with Solaris, residing in an artificial reality, or it's Solaris's brand-new method of contacting him.

"Solaris" declines to follow standard narrative constructs, much like the enigmatic planet main to the story. It is less an area expedition movie and more a psychological and philosophical assessment of the human mental condition, relationships, and the concept of existence.
