A New Neighbor
The story begins as Vincent's life gets disrupted when Maggie, a single mother played by Melissa McCarthy, and her child Oliver (Jaeden Martell), move next door. Maggie, under heavy tension from her continuous divorce proceedings and requiring to work long hours to support herself and her kid, employs Vincent as a sitter for Oliver, regardless of Vincent's gruff attitude and not being the perfect role model material.

Despite their non-traditional relationship, the bond in between them enhances. This relationship forms the heart of the movie and provides both comedic and dramatic components. Throughout their experiences, Oliver finds that there's more to Vincent than one might see on the surface, including his past as a Vietnam War veteran and his continuous relationship with a Russian sex worker, Daka, played by Naomi Watts.

The Hero Vincent
Oliver, now having a deep understanding of Vincent's struggles, sees him as his hero and not simply his bad-tempered old next-door neighbor. For his school task on saints, he selects Vincent. Oliver illustrates an everyday hero living among us, a 'St. Vincent', who braves through tough times and still has generosity to extra, therefore, reframing Vincent's life in such a way that nobody else might see.
