Kingdom of Hungary, 17th century. As she gets older, powerful Countess Erzsébet Báthory (1560-1614), blinded by the passion that she feels for a younger man, succumbs to the mad delusion that blood will keep her young and beautiful forever.

Film Overview
"The Countess" is a French-German historic drama thriller film that was launched in 2009. Written and directed by French starlet Julie Delpy, she also stars in the film as Countess Erzsébet Báthory, based upon the real-life Hungarian noblewoman well-known in history and folklore for supposedly eliminating girls to shower in their blood to keep her youth. The movie also features Daniel Brühl and William Hurt in pivotal functions. "The Countess" delves into the styles of vanity, fascination, power, seduction, and the mission for fountain of youth, embeded in a chilling historic background.

Plot Summary
In the film, Countess Erzsébet Báthory is widowed at a reasonably young age and acquires the large Báthory estates. She falls for a much younger man called István Thurzó (Daniel Brühl). Their enthusiastic romance does not last long as István's daddy György (William Hurt), given his political ambitions, forces him to end the relationship with the Countess. This heartbreak is a turning point in the movie as it triggers Erzsébet's descent into insanity and cruelty.

Erzsébet, consumed with keeping her vibrant charm to win back István's love, is convinced by a charlatan therapist that virgin's blood is the secret to youth. This drives her to begin eliminating virgin women and bathing in their blood. Her cruel deeds make her the nickname 'The Blood Countess'. On the other hand, the sad István marries another woman and has children but continues to remain in love with Erzsébet.

Resolution and Ending
Erzsébet's gruesome atrocities don't go undetected for long. The reports of her blood baths reach the Hungarian King Matthias II who buys a trial versus her. In spite of the horrifying allegations and statements from survivors of her ruthlessness, Erzsébet preserves her innocence. However, she is found guilty and sentenced to a life of imprisonment within the walls of her own castle.

Towards completion of the movie, Erzsébet's compulsive love for István turns fatal when she thinks that eliminating him would make him forever hers. She draws him to her castle by persuading him that their daughter is seriously ill. However, István challenges her about the murders, resulting in a lethal fight between them.

Conclusion
"The Countess" offers an imaginary retelling of the infamous Countess Erzsébet Báthory, decorating her history with mental complexities centered around the styles of love, obsession, and vanity. Delpy's representation of the protagonist oscillates between vulnerability and monstrous, resulting in a hauntingly extraordinary film. The film smoothly includes components of historic drama with gothic horror, resulting in an engaging tale of a female's descent into insanity due to her unfortunately unrequited love and relentless pursuit of eternal appeal.
