Story Synopsis

Eliminated from the academy for their mission, Costigan is chosen to go undercover within Costello's gang, aiming to acquire their trust and reveal their mole within the MSP. Meanwhile, Sullivan quickly climbs the cops ranks and keeps Costello one action ahead of the law, feeding him essential inside information. The narrative wonderfully establishes these two parallel stories in which Sullivan pursues a seemingly typical life with his girlfriend, while Costigan deals with the extreme truths of his undercover identity, falling for his psychiatrist Madolyn (Vera Farmiga).

Identity Crisis And Deadly Revelations
As the story profits, both moles find their commitments tested and their true identities at danger of exposure. Costigan starts to distrust his MSP contact, Dignam (Mark Wahlberg), while Sullivan grows uneasy discovering Costello is an FBI informant. The climax spirals into deadly fights after Costigan exposes Sullivan's treachery upon sharing an envelope identical to ones Costello utilized.

Ending
The film concludes with a series of betrayals and abrupt deaths. Costigan arrests Sullivan but is killed by Barrigan, another corrupt police in Sullivan's team. In retaliation, Dignam shoots Sullivan. The last scene covers with a rat running across Sullivan's house balcony, symbolizing the corruption within the police force.
