The Man with the Iron Heart (2017)

The Man with the Iron Heart Poster

With the Third Reich at its peak in 1942, the Czech resistance in London plans the most ambitious military operation of WWII – Anthropoid. Two young recruits are sent to Prague to assassinate the most ruthless Nazi leader – Reinhardt Heydrich, head of the SS, the Gestapo and the architect of the Final Solution.

Introduction
"The Man with the Iron Heart" is a 2017 biographical drama film directed by French filmmaker, Cédric Jimenez. The motion picture is an adaptation of Laurent Binet's unique, "HHhH", where HHhH means "Himmlers Hirn heißt Heydrich" (translated: Himmler's brain is called Heydrich). The movie's title refers to Reinhard Heydrich, the notorious Nazi General described as "the man with the iron heart".

Plot and Setting
Set in the years of World War II, between 1939 and 1942, the film informs the story of Reinhard Heydrich (depicted by Jason Clarke), one of the primary architects of the Holocaust, called as the "Butcher of Prague". The movie script shows his meteoric rise to power as he rises ranks among the Nazi elite, architected by his puppet master, Heinrich Himmler (Thomas M. Wright). The first half of the movie narrates Heydrich building his power base and protecting his position as one of the crucial leaders of the Reich, which he does mercilessly and without regard for human life, personifying the Nazi's harsh regime.

The Assassination Plot
The story takes a twist with the development of Operation Anthropoid, a secret objective performed by the British government to assassinate Heydrich. The second half documents this plot, headed by 2 Czechoslovakian soldiers in exile, Jan Kubiš and Jozef Gabčík, represented by Jack O'Connell and Jack Reynor respectively. The duo, who were a part of the British's Special Operation Executive, are parachuted back into their homeland in December 1941 on a mission to eliminate Heydrich. The narrative switches between the cold, callous world of Nazi high command and the morally conflicted lives of resistance fighters.

Climax and Conclusion
In the film's climax, Operation Anthropoid culminates in a high-tension ambush, leading to Heydrich's assassination. Despite their objective's success, the after-effects witnesses ruthless retaliation from the Nazis, massacring whole Czech towns and a desperate last stand of resistance fighters against the getting into German forces in a church. The film concludes ominously, foreshadowing the horrors to come in the later stages of the war.

Important Reception
Critics applauded the historic accuracy of "The Man with the Iron Heart" and the nuanced efficiencies of the stars representing real-life characters spoiled in a war-torn world. However, the movie's segmented narrative design, moving back and forth between two disparate storylines, was slammed for separating the audience from the characters. Some critics observed that the narrative construct lessened the psychological effect of the film.

General
"The Man with the Iron Heart" stands as an unforgiving representation of one of the darkest chapters of human history and the men who stirred its fury. It clarifies a lesser-known aspect of World War II history and uses a chilling look into the life and death of one of the most well-known war criminals in history, Reinhard Heydrich. The film carries a heavy message about the brazenness of power, the turmoil of war, and the desperate steps of resistance that can alter the course of history.
