Americans Amy, Stacy, Jeff and Eric look for fun during a sunny holiday in Mexico, but they get much more than that after visiting an archaeological dig in the jungle.

Film Overview
"The Ruins", launched in 2008, is a scary movie directed by Carter Smith, based upon the book of the very same name by Scott Smith. The movie features a group of buddies who, throughout a vacation in Mexico, choose to go to an ancient Mayan temple, only to discover themselves in a scary circumstance. The plot focuses on travelers Amy, Stacy, Jeff, and Eric, who unexpectedly end up being caught at the top of a vine-covered pyramid, isolated by hostile Mayans and surrounded by an ominous and deadly unknown force.

The Journey Begins
The good friends satisfy a German traveler, Mathias, who suggests the journey to a remote archaeological dig at the ruins. Upon coming to the separated Mayan ruin site, the group is challenged by armed, native Mayans who require them to climb the ruins. The Mayans obstruct them from leaving the location, making it clear that they will use force, contributing to the foreboding atmosphere.

The Pyramid's Sinister Secret
Once on top of the ruins, the group comes across a well hidden under thick vines. Mathias' sibling, who has fallen into the well, is found paralyzed and surrounded by the exact same distinct, sneaking vines. The group soon realizes the scary reality: the plants covering the pyramid are carnivorous, feeding upon all flesh they enter into contact with. Meanwhile, they stay trapped, as the Mayans continue to threaten to eliminate anybody who tries to come down from the ruins.

The Struggle for Survival
The rest of the movie focuses on the characters' desperate battle for survival. As the days pass, they run out of water and food, and the relentless plant life selects them off one by one. While the seclusion and fear result in inescapable disputes within the group, they also deal with the danger of the slow, uncomfortable death offered by the flesh-eating vines.

Terrible Endings
The terror escalates when Stacy gets infected by the meat-eating vines, triggering her partner, Eric to carry out an unscripted surgical treatment to remove them. Sadly, driven by worry and insanity, Stacy kills Eric. Amy and Jeff, the two survivors, prepare a strategy to get away. Jeff sacrifices himself as a distraction for the armed Mayans while Amy dashes.

Conclusion
In the last minutes of "The Ruins", Amy effectively manages to leave the terrible pyramid and the clutch of the Mayans. However, the fear does not end there. As she hitchhikes a ride back, she finds the meat-eating vines, exposing that they had actually stashed in her clothes. The cooling revelation leaves an open ending with the threatening ramification of the plants' possible spread.

"The Ruins" effectively manages to blend components of suspense, scary, and mental drama, making it a gripping expect fans of the scary category. The movie's dramatic narrative combined with the frightening nature of the carnivorous plants produces an unique and chilling beast of their own, raising it from an easy vacation-gone-wrong tale to an expedition of survival and the monstrous capacity of nature.
