The film takes the audience on a thrilling flight through 1984 Los Angeles, with its near-constant chase scenes as the Terminator non-stop pursues Sarah and Kyle. The Terminator appears to be essentially invincible, making it through attempts to ruin it that would easily kill a human.

The climax of the film sees Sarah and Kyle trying to destroy the Terminator in a factory, a paradoxical set for a face-off with a maker. Kyle handles to plant explosives on the Terminator however is mortally wounded in the process. The resulting explosion shreds the Terminator's artificial flesh, revealing a metal endoskeleton.

Sarah manages to tempt the durable machine into a hydraulic press and squashes it, allegedly ending its reign of horror. Shortly after, Sarah discovers that she's pregnant with Kyle's kid, hinting at the survival of humanity's future leader, John Connor.
