Background and Production
"The Information" is the ninth studio album by American singer-songwriter Beck, released on October 3, 2006, by Interscope Records. The album's production began in 2003, shortly after the release of his previous album, "Sea Change". Beck reunited with Nigel Godrich, the producer who had collaborated with him on "Mutations" in 1998 and "Sea Change" in 2002. The album was tape-recorded at Ocean Way Studios in Los Angeles.

In an interview with MTV news, Beck mentioned that the idea behind "The Information" was to produce something that felt like a culmination of all the various designs and genres he had checked out throughout his profession. The album integrates aspects of indie-rock, hip-hop, funk, and even sprays of folk, hence showcasing his adaptability as an artist.

Idea and Artwork
The album's idea revolves around the themes of information, modern media, and technology's influence on society. Beck has discussed that he was influenced by the fast changes in media throughout the early 2000s and felt the requirement to resolve the overwhelming quantity of information that individuals are constantly exposed to.

To show the album's principle visually, the art work for "The Information" is extremely interactive and personalized. Each album copy includes a blank grid, a set of stickers, and imagery that could be set up by the listeners as they choose. This unique approach was a collaboration between Beck and graphic designer, Jeremy Blake.

As an outcome of this method to art work, there were problems with sales tracking considering that the album's barcode was just consisted of on a sticker different from the album's packaging, instead of permanent placement on the cover. Beck was required to release a barcode-free version of the album in the UK in action to concerns that its original style would hurt its main chart position.
