Nature & Animals Quote by David Herbert Lawrence

"Be a good animal, true to your animal instincts"

About this Quote

Lawrence’s line reads like a permission slip disguised as a commandment: stop performing civilization and start listening to the body. “Good animal” is a deliberately provocative phrase, because it scrambles the usual moral hierarchy. We’re trained to hear “animal” as insult (crude, base, unthinking), yet Lawrence welds it to “good,” insisting that virtue might live below the neck. The bite of the sentence comes from that reversal: the “good” he’s after isn’t politeness or productivity, but an honesty that refuses self-betrayal.

The subtext is anti-modern, and specifically anti the kind of modernity Lawrence watched harden in early 20th-century England: industrial routine, class discipline, emotional repression, the mind enthroned as manager of everything. “True to your animal instincts” doesn’t mean he’s cheering mindless impulse; it’s a critique of the way people are trained to distrust desire until it curdles into shame, aggression, or numbness. Lawrence’s “instinct” is closer to a moral sensor than a party trick: a call to recover appetite, sensuality, and embodied intuition as sources of knowledge.

Context matters because Lawrence wrote through the cultural aftershocks of Victorian restraint and into the mechanized trauma of World War I. Against a world that turned bodies into units - workers, soldiers, husbands, wives - he argues for the irreducible creatureliness of the person. It works as rhetoric because it’s blunt, almost feral, forcing the reader to confront how much “being civilized” can resemble being domesticated.
