"Christ, seven years of college, down the drain"
About this Quote
The intent is comic overreaction with a blade inside it. Belushi, in Animal House mode, is performing a kind of anti-aspiration: the American promise, deflated into a beer-soaked shrug. The subtext is class anxiety dressed as rebellion. College is expensive, time-consuming, morally sanctified - and here it’s treated like a busted investment. That’s why “down the drain” hits: it borrows the language of money and disposal, turning education into something you flush.
In context, it’s also a snapshot of a 1970s cultural pivot, when the glow of the postwar meritocracy was dimming and “credentialing” started to feel less like opportunity and more like bureaucracy. Belushi’s genius is making that disillusionment hilarious without ever sounding like a lecture. The line doesn’t argue; it detonates.
