Success Quote by Jerry Lewis

"Every man's dream is to be able to sink into the arms of a woman without also falling into her hands"

About this Quote

Lewis lands the punchline in the gap between romance and liability. The first half sells a soft-focus fantasy: surrender, comfort, the bliss of being held. Then he flips the verb. “Arms” are warmth; “hands” are leverage. In one sentence, intimacy becomes a negotiation over who’s really in control, and that pivot is classic Lewis: broad enough to sound like a gag you’d hear in a nightclub, sharp enough to expose a whole mid-century gender script.

The intent isn’t to deliver a timeless truth about men and women so much as to dramatize male anxiety about entanglement. The “dream” he names is a desire for closeness without consequence: to receive affection while dodging obligation, commitment, or being “handled” emotionally and financially. The subtext is transactional, even paranoid: love as a trap, a woman’s touch as both invitation and capture. That cynicism is what makes it work as comedy; it acknowledges a selfish impulse many people recognize, then exaggerates it into a neatly balanced phrase.

Context matters. Lewis built a persona around the overgrown boy-man who wants comfort but panics at adulthood. In the postwar era, with marriage pitched as social destiny and women increasingly visible as consumers and decision-makers, the fear of being “in her hands” reads like a joke about shifting power: men craving the soothed ego of romance while resisting the accountability that comes with it. The laugh comes from the confession he won’t quite admit is a confession.
