"I don't think HBO would want to do anything in conjunction with Sub Pop, but I never asked either"
About this Quote
The line is also a neat self-own. Cross casts himself as the guy daydreaming about an impossible crossover, then undercuts it with, "but I never asked either". That last clause deflates any whiff of entitlement. It suggests hes both savvy enough to see how cultural hierarchies work and too allergic to hustle to play the game. In a comedy economy where networking is mandatory, the refusal to even inquire becomes its own form of punk performance.
Theres a quieter satire of how collaborations get imagined in the first place. People talk about brands like theyre people with tastes, friendships, and grudges. Cross mimics that parasocial corporate thinking, then punctures it. The subtext: we treat the culture industry as a series of cool-kid tables, and even when we criticize that system, we still fantasize about being invited to sit at the right one.
