"I like doing a bunch of different things, being all over the place"
About this Quote
The subtext is about control. Comedy is an industry that loves "types" and neat marketing categories, and it’s especially eager to reduce women - and queer Black women most of all - to a single usable version of themselves. Sykes rejects that economy of simplification with a shrugging confidence. "All over the place" could be read as scattershot, but she reclaims it as range: a way to deny gatekeepers the satisfaction of deciding what you are.
There’s also an ethic of speed here. Stand-up rewards the comic who can pivot, remix, and respond to the news cycle without losing their voice. Sykes’s persona has always been sharp, impatient with hypocrisy, and allergic to pretense. This quote turns that sensibility inward: a reminder that her brand is mobility. She’s telling you the point isn’t coherence; the point is momentum.
