"I was adored once too"
- William Shakespeare
About this Quote
This quote is a line spoken by the character Malvolio in William Shakespeare's play "Twelfth Night". The context of the quote is when Malvolio, a steward in the household of Lady Olivia, thinks that Lady Olivia is in love with him and begins to act big-headed and haughty. When he challenges Lady Olivia about her supposed love for him, she and her servants deceive him into thinking that she remains in reality in love with him however that he should act odd and ludicrous in order to prove himself to her. Malvolio falls for the trick and is ultimately embarrassed and imprisoned. The quote "I was adored as soon as too" is spoken by Malvolio as he regrets his scenario and assesses his own past experiences with love and affection. It speaks to the universal human experience of wishing to feel enjoyed and appreciated, and how the loss of that sensation can be an unpleasant and humbling experience.
