He rejected the label of Surrealist and opposed the postwar triumph of abstraction not because he shunned imagination, but because he believed imagination gains force only when it struggles against what is seen.

Amid a century intoxicated by novelty, he insists on continuity and accountability. Representation, even at its weakest, remains a wager on a shared world, a promise that painting can still mediate between private vision and common reality.
