He's not offering utopian escape but strategic agency: learn the rules well enough to bend them toward "human purposes". That last phrase is the moral payload. Bureaucracy and technology aren't villains on their own; they're amplifiers. They can standardize and deaden, or they can bankroll art, protect rights, enable community, buy time for contemplation.

Campbell's wager is that mythic thinking (a personal narrative of purpose) is how you keep from becoming merely legible to institutions.
