Art & Creativity Quote by Amy Poehler

"It's not communism, it's shouldn't be that everybody gets a try no matter how good or bad they are. It's our profession and our art, so we should eventually strive to be working with the best people"

About this Quote

Poehler comes in hot with a word she knows will spike the room: "communism". She uses it less as political theory than as a comedic flare - a deliberately overblown label for a real workplace anxiety in entertainment: the creeping idea that fairness means equal turns, equal credit, equal access, regardless of skill. The joke is the engine. By mocking the "everybody gets a try" ethos as if it were state ideology, she exposes how quickly creative spaces slide from merit to politeness, from risk-taking to group therapy.

The intent is protective, almost craft-militant. Comedy, especially in writers rooms and improv ecosystems, runs on scarcity: limited stage time, limited budget, limited patience from an audience that can smell compromise. Calling it "our profession and our art" doubles the claim. Profession means livelihoods; art means standards. She is arguing that the stakes are too high for participation trophies.

The subtext is also a quiet rebuke to a certain kind of well-meaning inclusivity that can become a shield against critique. "No matter how good or bad they are" is blunt to the point of impolite, but that bluntness is the point: she is defending judgment as an ethical responsibility, not just an aesthetic preference.

Context matters: Poehler comes out of improv and sketch, worlds that sell themselves as communal but are brutally edited in practice. Her line reads like someone who loves collaboration yet refuses to confuse kindness with curation. The punchline is cynicism; the deeper move is caretaking for the work.
