"Life's not fair, is it? Some of us drink champagne in the fast lane, and some of us eat our sandwiches by the loose chippings on the A597"
About this Quote
The imagery is doing heavy lifting. Champagne is a shortcut to effortless glamour, but “in the fast lane” gives it a faintly tacky, tabloid sheen: aspirational, a bit crass, slightly dangerous. On the other side, “sandwiches” are the most British, least romantic fuel imaginable, made worse by “loose chippings” (grit, roadwork, inconvenience) and the brutally unpoetic “A597,” a real-sounding road number that mocks the idea of destiny. Wood’s genius is that she doesn’t need to name “class” to invoke it; she lets infrastructure do it.
Subtext: resignation performed as comedy. The line accepts unfairness while quietly indicting it, because the contrast is so vivid it’s impossible not to feel the sting. Contextually, it’s pure Wood: observational, regional, suspicious of polished narratives, and tuned to the way Britain packages hierarchy as normal life - with a laugh to make it go down.
