"Men are by nature merely indifferent to one another; but women are by nature enemies"
About this Quote
The subtext is classic Schopenhauer: a bleak anthropology filtered through a personal and philosophical pessimism that often curdles into contempt. His system treats desire as a tyrannical “will” driving people to compete, suffer, and repeat. In that framework, women become convenient symbols of the will’s supposedly manipulative, reproductive cunning. “Enemies” implies strategy, rivalry, and threat; it invites the reader to see women’s social behavior not as adaptation to constrained roles but as innate antagonism. That’s how prejudice gains a metaphysical alibi.
Context matters because nineteenth-century Europe loved arguing that social hierarchies were natural facts. Schopenhauer’s era dressed up gendered expectations (marriage economics, limited agency, public-private divides) as destiny. The line flatters male readers with a myth of fraternal neutrality while projecting the messy reality of competition onto women, who were forced to compete for security in systems men largely controlled.
It “works” rhetorically because it’s aphoristic and absolutist: short, confident, untestable. Its cynicism feels like insight. That’s also its tell. When a claim needs “by nature” twice in one sentence, it’s usually trying to end an argument it can’t win on evidence.
