There is also the idea that the shock or novelty of nakedness distracts observers from searching deeper. The state of being seemingly open might obscure more intricate truths beneath the surface, truths unrelated to the body. Privacy, secrets, and essential elements of identity can remain untouched, protected by the decoy of vulnerability.

Winterson’s aphorism thus gestures toward the paradoxical safety in apparent exposure. To be “naked” may evoke a sense of having nothing left to lose, while actually providing a shield against expectations, assumptions, and interrogation. In a world obsessed with appearances and hidden motives, to stand naked, literally or metaphorically, may just be the boldest form of camouflage.
