About this Quote
Rogers, an actor and humorist who built a career on plainspoken wisecracks, knew audiences loved righteous heat. He also knew how often that heat curdles into embarrassment: the apology tour, the broken relationship, the career self-own. The joke quietly demotes rage from principled protest to bad aeronautics. That’s the subtext: anger isn’t inherently noble, and losing control isn’t the same as being right.
The timing matters. Rogers was speaking to a country ricocheting through the 1920s and the Great Depression, when public life was loud with blame, demagogues, and easy certainties.
