"Politics are not the task of a Christian"

Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s statement, “Politics are not the task of a Christian,” is rooted in his deep theological conviction about the primary calling of the Christian individual. For Bonhoeffer, Christian existence revolves around discipleship: following Christ, embodying his teachings, and prioritizing faithfulness to the Gospel above all secular allegiances. Politics, understood as the pursuit of power, influence, or participation in the machinery of the state, is fundamentally separate from the spiritual commitments of the believer. Bonhoeffer viewed the Christian’s primary allegiance as being to God and God’s kingdom, not to any earthly nation or political ideology.

The distinction here is not a call to withdrawal or indifference toward the world; Bonhoeffer himself was active in resisting Nazism and ultimately paid with his life for his opposition. Rather, he was careful to parse the difference between serving God and becoming entangled in the compromises and moral ambiguities of political life. For Bonhoeffer, the temptation for Christians is to lose sight of the radical obedience to Christ by investing hope in political solutions or by conflating Christian mission with political action. Christian vocation is first to witness, to love one’s neighbor selflessly, and to serve with humility. Politics, driven by earthly wisdom and often corrupted by power, can easily distract from these central tasks.

At the same time, Bonhoeffer was keenly aware of social responsibility. Christians have a duty to stand against injustice, protect the vulnerable, and speak truth to power. Such engagement is not because politics itself is their ultimate concern, but because faith demands active love in the world. The Christian is called to serve, not to rule. Thus, Bonhoeffer’s warning is less about apathy or isolation, and more about maintaining the primacy of the Christian calling, ensuring that the pursuit of justice arises from faithfulness to Christ rather than dedication to partisanship or political ambition.
