Self-determination is an idea that has been gone over in global law since the early 20th century. It is the right of an individuals to easily determine their political status and to pursue their economic, social and cultural advancement. In this quote, Jalal Talabani is recommending that self-determination might take lots of types, including self-reliance, confederacy, federal and autonomy. Self-reliance would suggest that a people would be totally independent from any other country or state, while a confederacy would involve a group of states or countries that are joined in a loose alliance. Federalism would involve a group of states or countries that are joined under a single federal government, while autonomy would involve a people can govern themselves within a larger state or nation. All of these kinds of self-determination would enable an individuals to pursue their own advancement and to identify their own political status.
