The intent is comic, but it’s not cute. Adults romanticize childhood because they control it; children experience it as surveillance plus uncertainty. Subtextually, it’s also a critique of American self-making mythology. We tell young people they can be anything, then punish them for not being something soon enough. Wagner compresses that cultural pressure into a single, disarming paradox: the horizon isn’t freedom; it’s anxiety. The laugh comes from recognition, and the sting comes from realizing how early that anxiety starts.
