This quote by Emile M. Cioran speaks to the human requirement to understand the world and our place in it. We often feel a sense of misery when we are not able to make sense of our lives and the world around us. In order to handle this misery, we develop meanings and formulas to give structure and suggesting to our lives. These definitions and solutions provide an exterior to the void, a way to understand the mayhem and uncertainty of life. However, these meanings and formulas are eventually insufficient and unable to supply a real understanding of the world. We need to accept that life is ultimately unforeseeable and disorderly, which our definitions and formulas are just a short-lived service to our misery.
