Daily Inspiration Quote by Kathy Acker

"We've been very bad at understanding why the right-wing does things"

About this Quote

Kathy Acker, the punk experimentalist who treated language like a battleground, points to a strategic failure: mistaking right-wing actions for mere hypocrisy or ignorance instead of reading the desires, fears, and fantasies that animate them. She is not excusing reactionary politics; she is diagnosing how power travels through stories, bodies, and everyday rituals. The 1980s and 1990s saw the rise of Reagan and Thatcher, the religious right, talk radio, and a new moral theater built around family, punishment, market freedom, and national pride. Facts and policy charts rarely puncture that theater because it gives people belonging, order, and a coherent narrative of danger and salvation.

Acker’s work insists that desire is political. She learned from theory and street culture alike that power moves through language and the body, through shame and aspiration, through the pleasures of obedience as well as rebellion. The right understands this intuitively: it casts authority as protection, hierarchy as comfort, punishment as justice, and purity as a form of love. It offers a myth of wholeness to counter the disorientations of modern life. When the left replies only with rational rebuttals or moral superiority, it fails to grasp why those myths feel good and why people will defend them fiercely.

Her art of appropriation and disruption can be read as a method for analysis. Rip open the scripts. Listen to the tones of voice. Track how slogans colonize intimacy and how policy rides on affect. The point is not to mimic the right’s manipulations but to recognize the psychic economies that make reaction enticing: fear of chaos, humiliation transmuted into resentment, the rush that comes with certainty.

Understanding why is the precondition for intervention. Without it, resistance swings at shadows, treating a complex libidinal order as a simple collection of bad arguments. Acker demands a politics able to read desire as closely as it reads legislation.
