"Yet did that Antiochus, who was also called Dionysius, become an origin of troubles again"

This quote by Flavius Josephus is describing Antiochus IV Epiphanes, a Seleucid king who ruled from 175-164 BC. Antiochus was likewise called Dionysius, and he gave great trouble for the Jews. He was a cruel and oppressive ruler who looked for to Hellenize the Jews and force them to abandon their religious practices. He desecrated the Temple in Jerusalem, prohibited the practice of Judaism, and imposed heavy taxes on the Jewish people. He also attempted to force the Jews to praise Greek gods, which resulted in a revolt versus his guideline. Antiochus' overbearing guideline caused excellent suffering and hardship for the Jewish people, and his actions were viewed as an excellent injustice. His reign of horror was ultimately ended by the Maccabean revolt, which saw the Jews reclaim their liberty and restore their religious practices. Antiochus' actions were a reminder of the value of religious liberty and the requirement to safeguard it.
