A womanizing city man meets Tillie in the country, after a fight with his girlfriend. When he sees that Tillie's father has a very large bankroll for his workers, he persuades her to elope with him.

Plot
The story focuses on the character of a city guy played by Charlie Chaplin, who satisfies nation woman Tillie, played by Marie Dressler, in the park. Seeing an opportunity to get his hands on some cash, the city man techniques Tillie into running away with him to the city, leaving behind her rural life. He persuades Tillie, who originates from a rich household, that he is in love with her which they need to elope.

Upon reaching the city, the city man gets Tillie drunk and abandons her. He then reunites with his genuine love interest, Mabel, portrayed by Mabel Normand. Meanwhile, Tillie, getting herself into various humorous incidents, starts operating at a dining establishment where she unknowingly prevents a break-in pieced together by the city male and his accomplices.

Twists in the Story
In a series of comical twists, Tillie acquires her uncle's fortune. The city man learns about Tillie's newly found wealth and tries to win back her favor, leaving Mabel in the process. Tillie is easily duped and forgives the city male, allowing him back into her life. They live luxuriously on her wealth, inviting a lot of attention and chaos.

However, the peaceful stage does not last long, as the city male arranges a celebration at Tillie's brand-new mansion. Throughout the party, the city male's true love, Mabel, shows up unexpectedly and causes a turmoil. A food battle ensues, which results in the arrival of the cops and the arrest of both Tillie and the city male.

Conclusion
Towards the end of the film, Tillie's allegedly dead uncle shows up alive, just to find his estate in mayhem, leading to Tillie losing her inheritance. Additionally, she discovers her city man's true identity and his misleading strategies, which breaks her heart. The movie concludes with Tillie returning to her previous quiet life in the nation, leaving the city and the chaotic love behind.

"Charlie Chaplin" shines throughout the movie as the master of 'drama interwoven with funny', preserving the hilarity while performing his character's sneaky plot.
