Daily Inspiration Quote by Arthur Schopenhauer

"All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident"

About this Quote

Schopenhauer offers a neat little staircase for every beleaguered heretic: mockery, persecution, canonization. It works because it flatters the speaker and indicts the crowd in the same breath. If your idea is being laughed at, don’t worry - that’s not a sign it’s weak; it’s proof you’re early. If it’s being attacked, congratulations, you’ve graduated to the “dangerous” tier. By the time it’s “self-evident,” the victors get to pretend they were never threatened by it at all.

The subtext is equal parts diagnosis and self-justification. Schopenhauer, famously prickly about recognition, writes as someone who suspects the world is structurally hostile to genius. The three stages aren’t just a theory of social change; they’re a psychological balm for the thinker who feels ignored. Ridicule becomes the necessary haze before truth can be seen. Opposition becomes a perverse credential: power wouldn’t bother punching down unless it sensed a threat.

Context matters: early 19th-century European intellectual life was crowded, hierarchical, and slow to reward outsiders. Philosophical systems competed like brands; reputations were gatekept by universities, salons, and journals. In that ecosystem, “truth” doesn’t simply win by being true. It has to survive the social immune system that treats novelty as infection.

The line’s brilliance is its portability - science, politics, art, tech - but that’s also its trap. Falsehoods also travel through ridicule and backlash, then harden into “common sense.” Schopenhauer gives dissenters a compelling narrative; he doesn’t give them a test.
