Writing in the wake of revolution and restoration, he prized moderation and inner discipline when public life was often shrill and punitive. His admonition reflects that sensibility: culture improves when example precedes judgment, and authority draws strength not from severity but from congruence between speech and deed. His notebooks, polished into aphorisms and published posthumously, return again and again to this ideal of gentle guidance.

None of this rejects correction. Children benefit from boundaries and clear feedback. But correction becomes credible when it is anchored in lived practice and proximity: doing alongside, not merely saying from above. In a world saturated with commentary and ratings, the principle is timely. Less scolding, more demonstration. Fewer diagnoses of what is wrong, more modeling of what is possible. The adult who lives the lesson becomes the lesson, and the lesson is then likely to endure.
