Culture here is not a neutral treasury of great works but a tool in the hands of an institution. By calling it an instrument, Weil points to how schools harness literature, philosophy, and art to reproduce themselves. The figure of the teacher stands for the gatekeeper of prestige and legitimacy; the outcome of the process is not a citizen or a lover of truth but another teacher. The cycle perpetuates a closed circuit, where the ends of education collapse into its means. What should nourish life and enlarge perception becomes a credentialing machine, churning out functionaries fluent in the codes of culture rather than souls trained in attention and justice.

Weil knew the system from the inside. A brilliant agrégée who taught in French lycees, she also left the classroom to work in factories and to test her ideas against material affliction. That lived contrast sharpened her suspicion that official culture often anesthetizes rather than awakens. It can become a badge of caste, an idol that screens the world of labor and suffering from view. When culture is deployed to manufacture teachers, it ceases to be a path toward reality; it becomes reproduction of authority, the kind of self-referential loop Bourdieu and Althusser would later anatomize.

Yet Weil did not reject culture. She revered Greek tragedy, geometry, and sacred texts, but demanded that they be used rightly: as exercises in attention that empty the self and orient the mind toward truth, the good, and the afflicted neighbor. The proper end of teaching is not the profession of teaching but the formation of persons capable of consent to reality. The line therefore works as a warning and a criterion. If culture circulates only within the school and returns to the school, it betrays its vocation. If it breaks the circle, sending students out with a sharpened sense of justice and a disciplined capacity to see, then it serves its true purpose.
