Faith & Spirit Quote by Clarence Darrow

"In spite of all the yearnings of men, no one can produce a single fact or reason to support the belief in God and in personal immortality"

About this Quote

Darrow doesn’t bother to gently disagree; he tries to clear the courtroom. The line reads like a prosecutor’s closing argument aimed at a jury of anxious believers: you may want God and an afterlife, but wanting isn’t evidence. The opening concession, “In spite of all the yearnings of men,” is the velvet glove. He acknowledges the psychological need - grief, fear, the craving for cosmic justice - and then strips it of epistemic authority. The pivot to “no one can produce” is key: belief is put on the stand, and the burden of proof is assigned to religion, not the skeptic.

The wording is legalistic by design. “Produce,” “fact,” “reason,” “support” are the vocabulary of cross-examination, not metaphysics. Darrow isn’t merely asserting atheism; he’s defending a standard of public argument where claims must be legible to shared evidence. That’s the subtext: in a modern, plural society, private yearning can’t be allowed to govern education, law, or policy.

Context matters. Darrow became a national symbol of secular defense during the Scopes “Monkey Trial” era, when science education and religious authority collided in the open. This quote channels that cultural fight: the insistence that evolution, justice, and knowledge shouldn’t be negotiated with unverifiable consolations.

There’s a steel-edged empathy here too. By naming “yearnings,” Darrow grants the human motive without granting the conclusion - a refusal to mock the need while still refusing to let need masquerade as truth.
