Time & Perspective Quote by Chris LeDoux

"Shoot, every time you get on an animal, you take your life in your hands"

About this Quote

A cowboy shrug is packed into that opening interjection, a casual “Shoot” that softens nothing. It is the laconic realism of someone who has met danger often enough to greet it with plain speech. Chris LeDoux earned that tone. Before becoming a country music cult hero, he won the 1976 PRCA world championship in bareback riding, spent years on the rodeo circuit, sold cassette tapes out of his truck, and wrote about the grit behind the myth. When he talks about getting on an animal, he means thousands of pounds of muscle and instinct, not a prop in a show.

The line names two truths at once: the animal is not a machine, and the rider accepts full responsibility. “Every time” strips away romantic exceptionalism; risk is not an accident but the routine cost of the work. “You take your life in your hands” is literal and figurative. In bareback, the rigging is gripped by one hand, the other floats for balance; a missed spur stroke, a slip, or a bad toss can mean a smashed shoulder or worse. Those same hands also stand for agency. No one else buckles the rigging or nods for the gate. The choice to ride belongs to the rider, along with the consequences.

There is also respect embedded here. To admit that an animal can end you is to honor its power and will, and to recognize the thin line between partnership and calamity. LeDoux’s songs often dwell on that thin line: the eight-second eternity, the ambulance lights, the long drive home with a sore back and a full heart. The statement rejects bravado in favor of sober courage. It captures the cowboy ethic of facing what cannot be fully controlled, not because death is ignored, but because life without risk would not be worthy of the name. In that acceptance, danger becomes clarity, and the ride becomes a chosen way to be fully alive.
