"The regeneration of society is the regeneration of society by individual education"
About this Quote
Context matters. Writing under Louis XIV’s absolutism, La Bruyere watched hierarchy harden into custom and custom masquerade as nature. Openly arguing for structural change was dangerous and, for a courtly moralist, aesthetically suspect. So he turns critique into characterology. Education becomes a safe proxy for reform: you can demand better minds and manners without naming the institutions that manufacture ignorance in the first place.
The subtext is quietly conservative and quietly radical at once. Conservative, because it shifts responsibility downward, away from power and toward the individual - a move that flatters elites who already have access to “education” and can treat virtue as a personal hobby. Radical, because it implies society is not regenerated by decree, spectacle, or punishment; it’s rebuilt by reshaping what people desire, tolerate, and recognize as normal.
It works because it reframes politics as pedagogy. Change isn’t a single event; it’s a long, intimate process of re-training attention and judgment. La Bruyere is betting that the most durable revolutions happen inside the skull, not at the palace gates.
